BBC has regenerated a lost Tom Baker episode, and we’re freaking out!

BBC, Tom Baker, Lalla Ward

When the BBC was able to restore Power of the Daleks, people were ecstatic. Now they’re going to do it again, with the never before seen episode Shada.

According to Radio Times, big news is on the horizon. The BBC used their magic, restoring the Fourth Doctor story Shada. With Industrial action at the BBC Doctor Who studio, the episode was never finished and dropped from the seventeenth season.

Written by Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy author Douglas Adams, Shada was the finale of the 17th season. Thanks to a little bit of regeneration energy, we’ll see it this year, 38 years since the episode was set to air.

The BBC completed the six-part story of Shada and is ready for viewer consumption. The story will have original footage mixed with color animation and audio specially recorded by the cast. From what we know, it will include Tom Baker as the fourth doctor, and Lalla Ward as Romana II.

"“Shada was one of my favourite Doctor Who stories,” said Baker. “I have many fond memories of shooting the location scenes in Cambridge, and it was disappointing not to finish the story in studio. I’m so glad that BBC Worldwide have found a way to bring fans a complete visual version.”"

When can we expect it?

After bringing back Power of the Daleks, Paul Hembury said he’s happy to be able to complete and bring back another Doctor Who classic. This will be the first time a full version of the episode will air. In 1982, Tom Baker recorded a narration for the missing scenes from the episode, but the original episode was never seen. However, the new version will have come from seven hours of raw footage from the original episode shoot.

Doctor Who: Shada will be released first as a digital download on 24 November, followed by a DVD and Blu-Ray release in a special packaging on 4 December, seen above. As far as is indicated these are UK dates, US dates are unknown.
