Maisie Williams joins the X-Men, Liam Cunningham teases absences in season 8, and more
By Dan Selcke
We’ve got a grab-bag of stuff to round out your Friday. What’s happening in the world of Game of Thrones cast members?
First up, Maisie Williams features in the first trailer for The New Mutants, a spinoff of the X-Men movies. By the look of things, The New Mutants looks like It’s X-Men if X-Men were set in a haunted insane asylum. Have a watch:
Williams plays Rahne Sinclair, also known as Wolfsbane. Her mutant power is the ability to turn into a wolf. Do you get the idea there’s some subtle typecasting going on there, what will Williams being best known as a member of the direwolf-loving Stark clan?
Anyway, The New Mutants hits theaters on April 13, 2018.
In other news, Liam Cunningham (Davos) discussed a largely forgotten character when talking to TV Guide: Marya Seaworth, Davos’ wife and the mother of his dead son Matthos.
Yes, Davos is supposed to have a wife, although you’d be forgiven for forgetting that. She hasn’t been mentioned in ages, and we’ve never seen her. Cunningham doubts she’ll turn up in season 8, either.
"I don’t think it’s going to happen. We’ve got six episodes left and we’re ramping up to World War III in Westeros. The introduction of my fabulously beautiful wife, I’d imagine, is not going to be seen."
Maybe he can return to Marya after the series is over…if he lives. When he lives.
Moving on, are you upset that the talented Gemma Whelan (Yara Greyjoy) didn’t have a bigger part in Game of Thrones season 7? If so, you may enjoy her work on Nevermoor: The Trials of Morrigan Crow, a young adult novel by Jessica Townsend. It’s about a girl, Morrigan, who’s blamed for all the misfortune around her on account of a pesky curse she was born under. She finds refuge in the magical city of Nevermoor, where she has to prove herself worthy of joining the Wundrous Society, the city’s most prestigious organization. You think it sounds a little like Harry Potter? YOU sound a little like Harry Potter.
Ahem. Whelan narrated the audiobook, out on October 31. Here’s a sample:
Finally, Michael Leighton, the goalie for the Syracuse Crunch professional hockey team in Syracuse, New York, has had his helmet outfitted with all manner of Game of Thrones iconography. This video pretty much speaks for itself:
And that’s all! Dance us out, Sophie Turner.
Thank you.
