New HBO Trailer for “Kit Harington’s Gunpowder,” plus a preview of Episode One

First, we were chomping at the bit for Kit Harington’s three-part historical epic Gunpowder, about the failed Gunpowder Plot to assassinate King James I in 1605, to make it’s way to the USA. We cheered when HBO picked up the miniseries and scheduled its North American premiere for Dec 18 at 10:00 p.m., with the other two episodes to air on the two nights after that. (It’s already aired in the UK on BBC One.) We’ve seen the BBC One first look and official trailers, but HBO just dropped a brand new trailer of their own. Check it out:

Note that HBO is calling it “Kit Harington’s Gunpowder” now. (Harington produces as well as stars.) They know how to get butts in seats.

It’s a fine trailer, suitably grim and dark. Harington’s natural intensity serves him well in this tale of assassins and intrigue. Plus, he’s ably assisted by Liv Tyler (The Lord of the Rings), Tom Cullen (Downton Abbey) and fellow Game of Thrones alumni Mark Gatiss (Tycho Nestoris).

We didn’t have to wait long for HBO to get it’s Gunpowder PR machine rolling, did we? And it’s a good bet there will be plenty more between now and then. In the meantime, we can also watch this interesting BBC One First Look at Episode One:

It’s a nice appetizer that lets Harington show off what he can do in the role of his real-life ancestor, Robert Catesby, who confronted the powerful representatives of the English King. Not many actors can do smoldering fury exploding-around-the-edges like Harington.

The Gunpowder miniseries is based on the early 17th century Gunpowder Plot, when Catesby and his group of Catholic activists attempted to blow up the House of Lords while the King was in it.

All we need do now is wait and remember, remember…that it airs on the 18th of December.
