Composer Ramin Djawadi finally gets a Grammy nomination for his work on Game of Thrones

You know who Ramin Djawadi is, even if you’ve never seen his face. He’s the composer behind all the songs on Game of Thrones, from the iconic opening theme to the explosive “Light of the Seven.” “Goodbye Brother,” “Dracarys,” “The Rains of Castamere”…this guy has done some amazing work on this show, and as far as I’m concerned, he deserves all the awards the music industry can give him.

And yet, for some baffling reason, Djawadi has never been nominated for a Grammy for his work on Game of Thrones (although he did snag a nomination for writing the score to Iron Man back in 2009). That changed yesterday, when the Recording Academy announced the nominations for the 60th Annual Grammy Awards. At long last, Djawadi is getting his due, earning a nomination in the category of “Best Score Soundtrack For Visual Media.” Here’s what the field looks like:

  • Arrival (Jóhann Jóhannsson, composer)
  • Dunkirk (Hans Zimmer, composer)
  • Game Of Thrones: Season 7 (Ramin Djawadi, composer)
  • Hidden Figures (Benjamin Wallfisch, Pharrell Williams & Hans Zimmer, composers)
  • La La Land (Justin Hurwitz, composer)

As you can see, the Grammys are a wee bit behind the times here — every movie on this list save Dunkirk was released in 2016 — but it’s great to see Djawadi on there. And since Game of Thrones season 7 is the most recent in time of any of the nominations, he stands a better chance of winning. It’s also the only TV on the list — that’s how good his work was.

Season 7 was full of wonderful tracks. “Truth,” the theme that plays when we find out about Jon Snow’s true origins, sticks out in my head.

Then there are the songs that play during the Loot Train Attack sequence. Pulse-pounding stuff:

The Grammys will air on CBS on Sunday, Jan. 28. Bring it on home, Djawadi.

Next: New character confirmed for season 8, other unspecified roles cast
