Jason Momoa: Game of Thrones season 8 will be “the greatest thing that’s ever aired on TV”

A while back, former Game of Thrones star, current Justice League star, and full-time force of nature Jason Momoa (Khal Drogo) visited Belfast to hang out with some of his erstwhile Game of Thrones cast and crewmates. Drinks were shared and good times had.

Naturally, Momoa’s presence so near the season 8 set led to speculation that he may be reprising his role as Khal Drogo. And yes, I know Drogo died way back in season 1, but he still managed to make a cameo appearance in season 2 when Dany entered the House of the Undying, so who’s to say he couldn’t return via a flashback or one of Bran’s romps through the past?

But speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Momoa vehemently denied all of this. “I just showed up to see [producers David Benioff and Dan Weiss] and I just happened to see people on set,” he said. “I haven’t been over there in a long time. You just want to see your friends and you end up make headlines going, ‘Drogo’s back!’ and I’m like, ‘He’s dead! He can’t come back, it wouldn’t work.’”

“I’ve always wanted to meet Kristofer Hivju” Momoa added. “He’s just awesome.” Agreed.

However, while he may not have been in Belfast to film season 8, Momoa couldn’t help but learn about what’s going to happen in season 8, and by the sound of it, he’s delirious with excitement.

"Just knowing how amazing this season is going to be. It’s going to be the greatest thing that’s ever aired on TV. It’s going to be unbelievable. It’s going to f— up a lot of people. And it was a bummer because I’m a huge fan and I didn’t want to know what’s going on. I was like, ‘Damn, I didn’t want to know that!"

Color us curious.

EW also asked Momoa to name his favorite season of the show apart from the first, a question that gave the actor pause. In the end, he opted to gush about season 7, where the Dothraki played a bigger role than they had in a while. “All last season I was jumping around like an idiot,” he said. “Seeing the Dothraki riding over the hill [in “The Spoils of War”], going into battle, surfing their horses, it was unbelievable. It was such a cool scene. It’s also a bummer moment: Why couldn’t [Drogo] have died there! I could have died in battle. We never got to see Drogo going into battle.”

Man, the actors playing the Dothraki warriors who jumped from horse to horse were something else. And you know a rough-and-tumble guy like Momoa would have been all in on that stuff.

Momoa also enthused about Jon Snow’s stand-off against the wights on the frozen lake. It’s pretty clear he’s a big fan. “You’re just like: What? Now I have to wait a year and a half?” Amen, brother.
