Golden Globes: Game of Thrones season 7 nominated for Best Drama
By Dan Selcke
The Hollywood Foreign Press has released the nominations for the 2018 Golden Globe Awards, and as you can expect, Game of Thrones season 7 is represented. In fact, it’s nominated in the lead category for TV: Best Drama.
Here’s what Thrones is up against:
- “The Crown”
- “Game of Thrones”
- “The Handmaid’s Tale”
- “Stranger Things”
- “This Is Us”
Congratulations to the Game of Thrones cast and crew!
Having said that, we don’t love its chances of winning. For one thing, Thrones only has the one nomination. The show has never done great at the Golden Globes — it wasn’t nominated for anything for seasons 2 and 3 — but at least last year, in addition to its Best Drama nom, it snagged a Best Supporting Actress nomination for Lena Headey. This year, it’s just the one nomination.
And Game of Thrones has been nominated for a Best Television Drama Golden Globe before — for seasons 1, 4, 5 and 6 — and it’s never won. The only time it’s won anything at the Golden Globes was when Peter Dinklage took home the Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor in a Series for his work on season 1.
Basically, the Hollywood Foreign Press doesn’t seem to be on the Game of Thrones love train. And with The Handmaid’s Tale having already won the 2017 Emmy for Outstanding Drama Series and The Crown season 2 being nominated despite getting released mere days ago, the odds are stacked against Thrones. Which I guess makes it the underdog, which is weird, considering its size.
You can see what happens when the 75th Annual Golden Globes air on NBC on January 7.
