Psst: Watch ‘Conquest and Rebellion’ and the History and Lore videos from the season 7 boxset
By Dan Selcke
The Game of Thrones season 7 boxset is now in stores, available on both Blu-ray ($39.99) and DVD ($34.96)! You can also get a special steelbox edition at Best Buy, available in one of several cover variations. Watch it get unboxed below:
Among other things, the boxset includes 11 audio commentaries, a feature where the cast and crew sound off on the biggest moments of the season (Fire & Steel: Creating the Invasion of Westeros) and a feature on set design (From Imagination to Reality: Inside the Art Department). Entertainment Tonight has a clip from the latter, focusing on Daenerys’ throne on Dragonstone:
And Uproxx has a clip about the design of Euron Greyjoy’s ship, the Silence:
One of the main draws of the boxset, and something that’s available on both the DVD and Blu-ray versions, is Conquest & Rebellion: An Animated History of the Seven Kingdoms, a 45-minute documentary about Aegon Targaryen’s invasion of Westeros, from its distant origins to its long-term effects. Several cast members lend their voices to this animated documentary, including, in order of appearance, Harry Lloyd (Viserys Targaryen), Conleth Hill (Varys), Pilou Asbæk (Euron Greyjoy), Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (Jaime Lannister), Sophie Turner (Sansa Stark) and Aidan Gillen (Littlefinger). Some even record dialogue for the various historical figures who figure in the story!
It’s a detailed, informative feature that digs into obscure parts of A Song of Ice and Fire lore — right at the top, little-discussed people like Orys Baratheon, Argella Durrandon and Loren Lannister pop up in the cast of characters. And for the moment, you can watch it courtesy of YouTube’s own Talk Sasta.
We’re not sure how long that’ll stay up, but for now, enjoy. Also, it’s cool that the show is still employing Harry Lloyd so fully six years after his character died.
Another big draw are the History and Lore features, mini-documentaries that dive into esoteric parts of the show’s mythology. These only show up on the Blu-ray release. The season 7 boxset has eight:
- The Dragon Pit: 3:08 (narrated by Conleth Hill and Anton Lesser)
- The Golden Company: 2:55 (narrated by Iain Glen)
- The Citadel: 2:32 (narrated by John Bradley)
- Prophecies of the Known World: 4:08 (narrated by John Bradley)
- The Hand of the King: 4:01 (narrated by Aidan Gillen)
- Casterly Rock: 1:20 (narrated by Nikolaj Coster-Waldau)
- The Rains of Castamere: 5:40 (narrated by Nikolaj Coster-Waldau)
- Highgarden: 3:24 (narrated by James Faulkner)
And, like Conquest and Rebellion, all of these features have shown up on YouTube…for now. You can watch them below.
The Game of Thrones season 7 boxset is on sale now!
Clearly, the hype is here.
