Since the dawn of time, or at least since Steven Moffat has been the showrunner, people have been dying for a ‘Wholock’ crossover. Basically, the two shows would somehow combine, and bring Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman into the world of Doctor Who. Since Mark Gatiss already has appeared in both, it seemed like it wasn’t too much to ask.
We’ve even gotten close a couple of times. Most notably, in The Snowman, when the Eleventh Doctor pretends to be Sherlock Holmes. Fans didn’t miss the not-so-subtle shoutout to Moffat’s other successful show.
However, with the lights fading on Steven Moffat’s era and a new Doctor coming to the center stage, someone else has come forward. Sherlock’s own Amanda Abbington has voiced her want to be on screen with Jodie Whittaker. While many old companions constantly talk about wanting to come back and be a companion with Thirteen, Abbington has her own idea.
"“I’m going to ask my agent but I want to be [the Doctor’s] nemesis. I could be her arch enemy,” she tells RadioTimes.com. “I’ve never done Doctor Who and I’ve always wanted to. My kids say to me, ‘How come you’ve never done Doctor Who?’ And I say, ‘I don’t know’. On my list of next things to do is be in Doctor Who.”"
However, who knows how easy this will be? In the last seven years, all Abbington would have had to do was call up her friend and ex-boss. Will it be harder with Chibnall? No one is doubting Abbington’s abilities, certainly not after her fantastic performance as Mary Morstan. In fact, Abbington is probably the only person that could make someone who could come between the beloved couple ‘Johnlock’ and not be crucified!
I would love to see Amanda Abbington as a nemesis. Possibly a new Master? The possibilities are endless with a new showrunner. So maybe new blood on the producing side will favor her and finally get her on the show.
We’re personally all for it.
