Peter Capaldi put his fans first, right to the end of his run in Doctor Who

BBC, Doctor Who

We all worry when a Doctor’s time is up. It’s a difficult time and we don’t know what to expect from the new actor (or actress), and it can be nervewracking! Nine-year-old David McGalloway was having the same problems saying goodbye to the Twelfth Doctor.

But Christmas came for the young boy when he received a letter from the actor himself, sprinkled with just a bit of Christmas magic.

Peter Capaldi wrote a letter to the young boy, which was dated to the first day Doctor Who broadcast, along with an envelope and a signed picture. The letter read the following:

"“Dear David, I hope you are having a very merry Xmas. Xmas is always good fun. Well, not always. Not every single second,” Capaldi began the letter. “Regenerating is not completely good fun. And it usually happens about Xmas-time. But you know what? Even though it can be a little bit icky (like really bad flu) it has always, always turned out good for Dr. Who. The new doctor always becomes your favorite and the one that goes… well, he never really goes, he is always there, somewhere in time and space, and if you think about him hard enough you’ll see him, and he’ll see you.”“It’s like the Doctor says, ‘Everything ends and it’s always sad. But everything begins again, and that’s always happy. Be happy.’ So, have a brilliant Xmas, a happy new year, and a wonderful life — I’m sure you will. All the best, Peter Capaldi, Doctor ?”"

Are you crying, or is that just regeneration energy in your eyes? While there have been arguments since Peter Capaldi took on the role of how good his role was in Doctor Who, the fans have always been his top priority. Even part of his goodbye speech as the Doctor reflected that, using something he’d told a child when asked about the Doctor’s name.

"“I think he does have a real name, I think ‘the Doctor’, like everything about him, is a thing he’s come up with to make himself understood by human beings. I don’t think human beings could even really say his name. But I think we might be able to hear it. At a certain frequency. If the stars are in the right place, and your heart’s in the right place, you’ll hear it.”"

His speech as The Doctor in Twice Upon a Time reflected this with almost the exact same wording.

"“No-one would understand it anyway..“Except children. Children can hear it. Sometimes, if their hearts are in the right place, and the stars are too, children can hear your name.”"
