And awards season continues. On top of the nominations for Producers Guild Awards, Make-Up and Hair Stylists Guild Awards and Directors Guild of America awardsGame of Thrones season 7 is up for a couple of awards from the American Society of Cinematographers, per Variety. Two episodes of the latest season are in contention for the ‘Episode of a Series for Non-Commercial Television’ category. Here’s what the field looks like:

  • Gonzalo Amat for The Man in the High Castle (“Land O’ Smiles”)
  • Adriano Goldman, ASC, ABC for The Crown (“Smoke and Mirrors”)
  • Robert McLachlan, ASC, CSC for Game of Thrones (“The Spoils of War”)
  • Gregory Middleton, ASC, CSC for Game of Thrones (“Dragonstone”)
  • Alasdair Walker for Outlander (“The Battle Joined”)

As with the DGA Awards, Game of Thrones takes up more than one slot in a field of five, so its chances of winning are looking good. Game of Thrones won last year (for “Battle of the Bastards,” which beat out “Book of the Stranger”), and for season 3 (for “Valar Dohaeris,” which bested “Kissed by Fire”).

“Dragonstone” and “The Spoils of War” are both beautiful episodes, but I’m guessing “Spoils” will take it. Remember that lengthy shot where Bronn stumbled through the smoke-drenched battlefield on his way to Qyburn’s scorpion? That shot alone should clinch it.

The winners will be announced on February 17.

Moving on, Game of Thrones season 7 was honored at the American Film Institute Awards this past weekend. The AFI Awards are unique, since there are no actual awards to hand out; each year, the organization creates a reel featuring the best movies and television shows shown in the past 12 months. According to Variety, the atmosphere is a lot more relaxed and friendly than usual, since there’s no competition, no cameras, and no speeches. People just wait to see what was chosen.

This year, AFI chose 10 movies and 11 TV shows. Naturally, Game of Thrones was one of them — it shows up at 3:40, towards the end, but the whole thing is worth watching.

A very cool recap, of 2017 and movie and TV history in general. Keep on trucking, Game of Thrones.
