Liam Cunningham: The cast is putting “pressure” on itself to end Game of Thrones right

As Game of Thrones continues to film its eighth and final season, the pressure to wrap up the sprawling drama in a satisfactory way is always on the minds of the cast and crew, at least according to star Liam Cunningham (Davos Seaworth). Speaking to RTÉ Entertainment, he talked about the mindset of people on the set these days:

"The pressure we put on ourselves to try and get it as good as we possibly can. Because it’s not one person who is the lead in this, who’s carrying the whole thing, it’s an ensemble piece…We’re all fans of the show, for several years some actors only read their own bits so they could enjoy the show when they went home, they were that much fans of the show! So to be coming to the end, it’s going to be really weird, it’s the longest thing I’ve ever done in my life, for seven years, so it is kind of weird."

It’s good to see that the cast is taking the ending seriously, not that we ever doubted them. Although if we had access to the Game of Thrones scripts, we would never stop reading them.

As for Cunningham’s personal goals with the series, the needle has moved over time. At the start, “my ambition was to make it to the last season,” he said. “[A]nd now I’m in the last season my ambition is to make it to the last episode, typical selfish actor.”

It’s not selfish, Mr. Cunningham. If Ser Davos dies, we riot.

Cunningham made these comments at the announcement of the Irish Film and Television Academy award nominations. Both he and fellow Irishman Aidan Gillen (Littlefinger) are nominated for their work on Thrones, going up against each other in the category of ‘Actor in a Support Role — Drama.’ Game of Thrones is the only show to have more than one cast member nominated in that particular category, which can only help its odds.

Speaking about Gillen, Cunningham reminded us that while we may have been happy to see Littlefinger go, it was different behind the cameras:

"It’s very difficult yeah, because it’s been a bit of a family and we all feel like we’re on this bizarre rollercoaster, so when somebody hops off it’s difficult. I’ve worked with Aidan for the last 20 odd years on stage and screen so it was sad to see him go, but at the end of this season we’re all gone, so it’s going to be fun."

We can only imagine what the Game of Thrones series wrap party will be like; we only hope it’ll make Kit Harington’s recent snafu seem like child’s play.
