Peter Dinklage: No, that Doritos commercial doesn’t give away any Game of Thrones secrets

One of the more well-received commercials aired during this past Sunday’s Super Bowl LII featured Game of Thrones star Peter Dinklage rapping about Doritos Blaze opposite Hollywood heavyweight Morgan Freeman, who rapped about Mountain Dew. If you haven’t seen it, prepare for a life-changing experience:

Most of the world chuckled and moved on, but Game of Thrones fans went deeper, as is their wont. During Dinklage’s segment, the set bursts into flame — on account of Doritos Blaze being so hot, you see — and Dinklage breaths a puff of fire at the end. Some Thrones fans took this as evidence for a long-held fan theory: that Tyrion Lannister is secretly a Targaryen:

Unfortunately, Dinklage threw cold water on those flames during an interview with the Huffington Post. “I love every single theory the fans of our show have, because they’re so much fun,” he said. “They get to show the dedication and love they have for the show, but you have to understand that it is a Doritos commercial.”

"It’s not ‘Game of Thrones. So [fans] are sort of stretching the limit with that theory when you’re branching out to Frito-Lay commercials. But I say that with all love and respect. Please, I love them. I love the fan theories that they have until the show is finally over."

It did strike some (me, it struck me) as rather absurd that after all the work Game of Thrones producers have gone through to withhold secrets from fans that they would reveal a huge one in an ad for junk food. But we’ve gotta amuse ourselves somehow during the wait for season 8.

With that settled, Dinklage talked about filming the commercial itself, where he lip synced Busta Rhymes rap from “Look At Me Now.” “I will be the first to tell you that deep in my soul I was terrified of getting anything wrong, so I learned it frontwards and backwards.” It shows.

As for what it was like to rap battle Morgan Freeman, Dinklage wouldn’t hold back. “What was it like rapping against God? I wasn’t going to go easy on him just because I have love and respect for the man. You can’t.”

Game of Thrones season 8 will premiere in 2019. Bags of Doritos Blaze are available in a grocery store near you.
