Longtime Game of Thrones costume designer Michele Clapton, the woman behind such standout outfits as Daenerys Targaryen’s winter coat and Cersei’s series of increasingly opulent supervillain get-ups, took home the gold at the 20th annual Costume Designer Guild Awards, handed out last night. She won in the category of “Excellence in Sci-Fi/Fantasy Television” over designers from shows like Black Mirror and Star Trek: Discovery.

This was the fourth consecutive such award Clapton has won. She won for her work on seasons 4 through 7, and was nominated for seasons 1 through 3. (She shared the award for season 6 with April Ferry.) Why she didn’t win for those first three seasons is beyond us. Did the voters not see Ned Stark’s leather-and-fur ensemble?

Clapton, wearing all black in apparent support of the #MeToo movement, used her acceptance speech to speak out on her fellow costume designers. “I’m proud to wear black and I’m proud of the movement. We need to examine bullying and misogynistic bullying.”

In addition to the Costume Designers Guild Awards, Clapton has won three Creative Arts Emmys for her work on Game of Thrones. Season 7 may have contained Clapton’s best work yet. While her designs for Daenerys got the lion’s share of attention, my favorite of her outfits was Ser Jorah’s.

This year’s award show was hosted by Jane the Virgin star Gina Rodriguez, and was held in Beverly Hills. The full list of nominees can be found here.
