International Women’s Day: The women of Doctor Who
Doctor Who: Jodie Whittaker as the Doctor
Women have become the center of Doctor Who, especially now, as we join an era of where a woman plays the Doctor! What other women made a name for themselves on Doctor Who?
It would be wrong this year to not connect Doctor Who to International Women’s Day. Since July of 2017, Doctor Who has been in thrust into the mainstream media by the fact that they are changing the gender of the Doctor. Therefore, there’s no one bigger to celebrate on today’s International Women’s Day than Jodie Whittaker, who will take on the role of the Doctor later in the year.
People are interested to see what type of Doctor she’ll be. From what we’ve seen of her, her outfits, and what little of the set we can see, it looks like celebrating women won’t stop at the Doctor being one. There’s no precedent for a female Doctor, making this all up to her!
As for other women who have been in Doctor Who, we can’t forget Michelle Gomez, who made a name for herself as Missy, the female Master. Gomez did a fantastic job with not only giving people a character to love but to love so much, that people some love Missy more than past male regenerations. Gomez is definitely a character that we should celebrate.
We can’t forget the great companions that have come through the years, including Billie Piper, who played Rose Tyler. Rose was the first companion of the New Series and went on to have the first real love interest with the Doctor. Catherine Tate was already known in British Culture before being a companion but still made a difference as a companion to the Tenth Doctor to serve as his friend.
Finally, anyone who knows me would know I would have to include Alex Kingston, who played River Song. She was a huge part of the Eleventh Doctor’s arc and made a huge difference in his character, and the character of the Doctor in general.
