Jeffrey Wright had no idea how important his portrayal of Bernard Lowe was to fans. Bernard’s duality resonated with so many fans during the first season of Westworld.

With Westworld Season 2 right around the corner, we know one of the major players in the park’s chaos will be Bernard (Jeffrey Wright). Due to Bernard shooting himself in the head after learning about his true identity, it will be interesting to see which side he aligns with: humans or hosts. As a result, it’s this underlying duality that Bernard such a relatable character.

During SXSW 2018, Deadline interviewed Jeffrey Wright about what fans should expect in season 2:

However, in the interview, he talked about how Bernard’s cognitive impairment will affect his role in the story. Also, me mentions Bernard’s duality again. Bernard will be looking for his own awakening as he figures out where he belongs in Westworld. But it was in the SXSW 2018 panel interview where he talked about how Bernard affected the viewers.

Marsden in a group interview. The actors were asked why the show touched people in somany ways. They all described how since the show is shown through the eyes of the hosts, we began to feel for the robots. Eventually, Jeffrey Wright talked about a moment where he realized that Bernard resonated with so many people.

While he was speaking at a human rights campaign for LGBTQ people, one of the attendees came up and approached him. He said the person talked about the duality of Bernard after the big reveal. Consequently, the struggle within Bernard about his realization that he was not human changed that person’s life. Wright said that the duality that Bernard was feeling was exactly how he felt before he came out to his family and friends.

The look on Jeffrey Wright’s face and the responses made by the other actors showed just how powerful of a show Westworld can be. While the story focused on the struggles of the hosts, Westworld was a mirror held up in front of our society today.  We look forward to seeing and hearing about how season 2 will help change the lives of those around us.
