Season 8 filming: The cavalry comes to Magheramorne Quarry
By Corey Smith
HBO is going all-out with set building for the eighth and final season of Gameo of Thrones. One of its most elaborate is the enormous green screen at Magheramorne Quarry in Northern Ireland, where the show has filmed things like the Battle of the Blackwater, the Massacre at Hardhome, and more.
Initially, it was unclear what the crew was filming here, although with the white level area in front of the screen, we assumed it would involve snow. Then, when filming began, Unsullied extras showed up. Now, thanks to some video taken by Twitter’s own @DavynightorrOrr, we can see that they’ve been joined by some friends:
What we have here is a procession of actors on horseback trotting in a line in front of the green screen, although it’s unclear if they’re filming or rehearsing. It’s also unclear exactly who they are. The Dothraki? The Knights of the Vale. It could even be White Walkers, who have been known to sit on dead horses in a line. But given the earlier presence of the Unsullied, we’re betting this is the Dothraki.
Meanwhile, @GoTlikeLocation brings us a clear shot of the ship-and-green-screen set at Linen Mill Studios, taken back in February.
This ship set was used to film Euron’s attack of Yara’s fleet back in season 7. We haven’t seen the crew make use of it for season 8, but it’s still standing, which has to mean something. What do you guys think?
