Game of Thrones season 7 up for two BAFTA awards

The nominations for the 2018 British Academy Television Awards (the BAFTAs) have been announced, and as a show packed with British talent, Game of Thrones is in the mix. To be specific, season 7 is up for two awards.

First up, Game of Thrones costume designer Michele Clapton has been nominated for the Costume Design award. In that category, she’s up against Alison McCosh (Peaky Blinders), Jane Petrie (The Crown), and Joanna Eatwell (Taboo).

There were plenty of terrific costumes in season 7, from Jon Snow’s new armor to Daenerys Targaryen’s winter wear to pretty much anything Cersei wore.

Next up, Game of Thrones production designers Deborah Riley and Rob Cameron stand to win the Product Design award, testing their mettle against Joel Collins (Black Mirror), Martin Childs (The Crown), and Pat Campbell (The State).

Season 7 also brought us some spectacular new sets, including the redesigned castle of Dragonstone, Eastwatch-by-the-Sea, and the Dragonpit. Riley and Cameron more than earned their nominations.

Unfortunately, Game of Thrones has never done too well at the BAFTAs. It’s only been nominated four times before now, and only won once: the Radio Times Audience Award in 2013. That’s where fans vote on the winner from a list compiled by a room full of television critics.

At last year’s BAFTAs, “Battle of the Bastards” was nominated in the category of “Virgin’s Must-See Moments,” but lost to a bunch of snakes chasing an iguana on Planet Earth II. (Spoiler alert: the iguana gets away.) This could be the year Game of Thrones’ fortunes turn around, but we doubt it.

In any case, the BAFTA award ceremony will be held on April 22.
