When it comes to filming on Game of Thrones season 8, all eyes are currently on Magheramorne Quarry in Northern Ireland, where the show has erected a giant green screen and is currently parading all number of interesting people in front of it. We’re already seen the Unsullied, the Dothraki, and a Northern army arrayed in front of the green screen. Now, thanks to new photos from Oakleaf Photography and Hogwort, we can see even more people who have come to join the party. Beware SPOILERS below.
First up, check out these photos of extras wearing green screen suits, riding horses:
When you see a person in a green screen suit on the set of Game of Thrones, it usually means one thing: they’re playing a wight in a state of decay. The show uses prosthetics and makeup to create the White Walkers, but wights are often so dilapidated that they need assistance from the special effects department to work. The giveaway that the people on horseback above are wights rather than White Walkers is that, if you look closely, you can see that a couple of them are only wearing green on parts of their bodies, indicating that those parts will be filled in special effects (rotting flesh, bone, what have you), while the rest will be practical.
And that’s interesting, because we’ve only ever seen White Walkers on horseback before, not wights. What does this mean? Well, consider that a few days back, we saw what looked like a procession of Dothraki warriors riding past the green screen on horseback. Put these two things together, and we conclude that we’re probably looking at Dothraki wights here.
The Dothraki, man; even after death they don’t get off their horses.
You can also see some of the green-screened figures off their mounts in the shot below:
Beyond that, new photos show us that the Unsullied army is still standing tall, their spears raised high:
We also get a glimpse of the fires burning on set. Will these flames be blown up several times in size during post-production, or are they here for dramatic lighting? Or both?
And below, a boom microphone hangs over a couple of cast members so it can pick up their dialogue. We’re not sure who’s talking though — guesses are welcome.
Oakleaf Photography thinks it spotted one character on a horse: Brienne of Tarth. Does the silhouette look right?
Opinions, discussion, and wild speculation are all welcome.
