Was there ever any doubt that Joe Dempsie would return for the final season of Game of Thrones to reprise his role as Gendry, the hammer-wielding speedster? If you had any doubts, Dempsie put them to rest when he spoke to Metro at the premiere of his new FOX show Deep State, revealing not only that he’s in season 8, but that he’s terrified of inadvertently revealing its secrets. “We’re in the midst of shooting season 8, and a few months back in October we got sent the scripts for the final season and it was a really strange feeling,” he said.

"I remember getting to the end of that final episode and knowing that that was it, there wasn’t gonna be any more Game Of Thrones, and the idea that I have to now carry that around in my head between now and 2019 when it comes out…I’m gonna be drunk at various points! I don’t know if I trust myself. Even just walking around with those scripts in my mind and on me, it felt like this sort of huge secret that the world wants to know."

And there you have it, spoiler-hounds: Dempsie is a weak link. Proceed accordingly.

As for Deep State, an eight-part spy thriller, Dempsie plays Harry Clarke, and MI6 agent trying to acclimate to life in the field. “As the story progresses, Harry’s clearly curious and has joined MI6 in good faith and with the idea that’s he’s fighting the good fight, whatever that may be, and he’s on the right side,” Dempsie teased. “And as the series goes on that becomes more and more urgently questioned.”

Maybe portraying a guy whose very life depends on keeping secrets will help Dempsie keep what happens in season 8 a secret, no matter fervently the fans ply him with booze.

Deep State premieres on April 5 in the UK.
