Every Wednesday at 4:00 p.m., we take to our Facebook page to talk about all things Game of Thrones and A Song of Ice and Fire. Part of that is A Song of Dan and Josh, a series where myself and FanSided editor Josh Hill sit down and talk through a couple chapters of George R.R. Martin’s novels at a time. I’ve read the books several times over. Josh has only ever seen the show. What can we glean from these pages?

This week, we discuss two chapters from A Game of Thrones: Eddard VIII, where Robert fires Ned from the Small Council for suggesting that maybe they shouldn’t assassinate Daenerys Targaryen; and Catelyn VI, where we meet the Lysa and Robert Arryn. have a watch:

Topics include:

  • Whose side are we on during the Ned-vs-Robert debate? And how does Littlefinger, of all people, come up with the best solution?
  • How is Robert Baratheon like John McCain?
  • Why does Martin spend so time describing the geography of the Vale?
  • We get into how Lysa is a funhouse mirror image of Catelyn. Literary devices!
  • Martin introduces and adds shading to characters like Bronn, Brynden “the Blackfish” Tully, Mya Stone and others.

Next week, Ned and Jaime tussle on the streets of King’s Landing and Daenerys continues to empower herself in Vaes Dothrak.

Next: Game of Thrones will return to the Dragonpit in season 8
