A Song of Dan and Josh: Eddard IX and Daenerys IV
By Dan Selcke
Every week, we take to the Winter is Coming Facebook page to talk through the latest bits of Game of Thrones news on Take the Black Live, and every week, FanSided editor Josh Hill and I talk through another chapter or two of the Song of Ice and Fire series. I’ve read the books multiple times. Josh has never read them. Let’s dig in!

This week, we discuss Eddard IX and Daenerys IV, from a A Game of Thrones. Fans may know the chapters better as the one where Ned’s leg get crushed by a falling horse and Viserys Targaryen continues to be pathologically clueless.
This week’s topics include:
- Jaime confronts Ned on the streets of King’s Landing after Tyrion is kidnapped. There are some key differences between how this plays out on the page and on the screen. What are they, and why did they happen?
- Why is it so easy to forget that Robert and Cersei are married?
- As always, George R.R. Martin sprinkles narrative bread crumbs for fans to follow. In the Ned chapter, we get a small-but-crucial mention of Lyanna Stark and some clever foreshadowing about Jaime and Cersei’s relationship.
- Josh brings the metaphors: “This is the chapter where Daenerys hatches from her dragon egg into the woman that we all love on the show.”
- Viserys seems incapable of learning from his mistakes. Is his character too cartoonish?
- We talk about the idea of characters using clothing to assert their authority as power, and why George R.R. Martin’s love of detail may not be as self-indulgent as it appears.
Next time, we head back to Winterfell to join Bran as he adjusts to a life without legs. See you there at 4:00 p.m. CST on Wednesday!
