The first episode of Westworld season 2 — “Journey Into Night” is in the books. When las we left our heroes, human and otherwise, Dolores Abernathy (Evan Rachel Wood), a robotic “host”, had gained sentience and murdered her creator, Dr. Robert Ford (Anthony Hopkins), at a splashy party for Westworld investors, or “guests.” The season 2 premiere picks up the pieces from that event, showing both the hosts and guests digging in for a conflict. Will machines rise up and supplant humanity? Find out this spring on HBO.
After HBO airs a new episode of one of its shows, it usually gives us a trailer for the next one. We didn’t get a trailer for “Reunion,” next Sunday’s adventure, but we did get a trailer for the next nine episodes of season 2, which is rather better. Have a watch:
Dolores, loquacious as always, is becoming an old hand at giving long portentous speeches dripping with menace. Beyond her monologue, the most interesting thing about the trailer is all the shots of the host characters, including Dolores and Bernard, out and about in the real world, unless that’s just another park, albeit not a particularly fantastical one. We also get glimpses of Jimmi Simpson returning to the role of William, the young man who will become the Man in Black, and the always-welcome image of Maeve (Thandie Newton) wielding a samurai sword.
Westworld is a different sort of show from Game of Thrones — less sprawl, more clockwork precision — but it’s another carefully crafted trip through a densely imagined world. Will you be watching?
