David Benioff and Dan Weiss record a commentary track for the “Pickle Rick” episode of Rick and Morty

Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss are known to be big fans of Rick and Morty, the gonzo Adult Swim show about a brilliant, nihilistic scientist and his hapless grandson. In fact, when they were at  asked what show besides Game of Thrones they’d like to write for, Benioff immediately answeredRick and Morty.” What a world if would be if the writers for Game of Thrones and Rick and Morty switched places.

Anyway, that love has bubbled over into a commentary track on the Rick and Morty season 3 home boxset. Specifically, they commented on “Pickle Rick,” wherein Rick turns himself into a pickle, gets flushed down a sewer, makes himself a robotic suit, kills some rats, and finally attends therapy session with his family. It’s weird, but in the context of this show, it’s not that weird.

Entertainment Weekly has a clip from their commentary. Listen below:

They really do fanboy out all over this episode, calling it “the best writing of 2017.” And it’s adorable that they recite the lines before the characters say them. Per EW, elsewhere on the commentary, they call Rick and Morty “one of the funniest, smartest things ever put on TV; every one of its 22-minute plots is more ambitious than 99 percent of the science-fiction films that will be made in the next 10 years.”

For reference, here’s the clip without the commentary. And yes, that is Susan Sarandon as the therapist.

To be perfectly honest, Benioff and Weiss sound giddier here than they do on some of their commentary tracks for Game of Thrones episodes, but when you spend so much time on something you have to record a video message from set in lieu of appearing in person to accept a prestigious award, it’s probably nice to do something a little different for a minute.

Anyway, the Rick and Morty season 3 home boxset comes out on May 13 on both Blu-ray and DVD.
