Gwendoline Christie, Gemma Whelan and Natalia Tena land new TV gigs
By Dan Selcke
Game of Thrones is ending next year, and the people involved with it are reaping the benefits of having appeared on a show with such a wide reach. To wit: the actors behind Brienne of Tarth, Yara Greyjoy and Osha the willdling have all landed new TV jobs, and all of them sound pretty interesting.
First up, StarWars.com announces that Gwendoline Christie (Brienne) will reprise her role as Captain Phasma, the villainous First Order stormtrooper from The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi, in a new show called Star Wars Resistance, a show set before Star Wars: The Force Awakens. The animated series, which is created by the same guy behind other Star Wars cartoons like Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels, will revolve around Kazuda Xiono, a young pilot tasked with spying on the First Order.
This could be fun for Christie — as great as it was to see a Game of Thrones star featured in the Star Wars movies, I don’t think they quite used her to her full potential. (Oscar Isaac will also appear as Poe Dameron.) Star Wars Resistance will debut on the Disney Channel this fall, and on Disney XD thereafter.
Next, Digital Spy reports that Gemma Whelan (Yara) has joined the cast of Gentleman Jack, an eight-part BBC One drama about the life of Anne Lister, a wealthy landowner who returned to her native Yorkshire in 1832 after having exotic travels abroad and set about improving the area. A fascinating figure, Lister openly carried on relationships with other women, despite that being extremely taboo at the time, and is acknowledged today as the “first modern lesbian.” Much of the show will be based on Lister’s copious diaries, much of which were written in code, because taboo.
Lister herself will be played by Suranne Jones (Doctor Foster). Whelan will join a cast that also includes Sophie Rundle (Peaky Blinders) and Peter Davison (Doctor Who). Filming is set to begin next month.
Finally, Deadline reports on a new show coming to YouTube Red: Origin, a sci-fi mystery about a group of 10 strangers stranded on a spacecraft heading toward a distant planet. To survive, they have to work together, but one of them isn’t who they say they are. Cue intrigue.
YouTube Red is YouTube’s attempt to make original content, a la Amazon with Amazon Prime. Subscribers get access to many original shows, and get to watch normal videos without adds. Cable-cutting shows like this are all the rage now, so Origin could be a good move for Natalia Tena (Osha the wildling), who’s been cast in the lead role of Lena, a resilient, quick-thinking woman who naturally becomes a leader for the group.
Also in the cast is Tom Felton, best known to a lot of people as Draco Malfoy from the Harry Potter movies. Naturally, he’s playing another jackass here, an angry young man who’s a threat to himself and everyone around him. We’re pretty sure Osha can take Malfoy in a fight, so the group should be okay.
