Westworld is known for its beautiful filming locations; scenes in the park itself, with its mountains and deserts and winding rivers, are filmed in beautiful places like Castle Valley, Utah. But in Episode 202, “Reunion,” many important scenes took place outside of the park, like in the Delos mansion where William (Jimmi Simpson) hosts a retirement party for his father in law, James Delos (Peter Mullan).
As usual, HBO has released a behind-the-scenes video about the new episode. This week, we get to see how the Delos mansion scene came together. Check it out:
Several familiar hosts appeared at the party, including Dolores (Evan Rachel Wood) on the piano, while Angela (Talulah Riley) and Clementine (Angela Sarafyan) served drinks.
According to Locations Manager Mandi Dillin, In order to find a location that fit the character of James Delos — a rich and powerful “self-made man” — the production team scouted homes along the California coastline, finally landing on a beautiful seven-acre property in Malibu.
Writer/producer Carly Wray points out that James Delos is “ailing” (you can tell because he coughs once, which is a guaranteed death sentence in any movie or TV show), and that “there is something they are working on to fix that ailment.” If you ask me, all signs point to Delos working toward putting a human’s consciousness into a host’s body, something Dr. Ford (Anthony Hopkins) alluded to in season 1.
"We’ve managed to slip evolution’s leash now, haven’t we? We can cure any disease, keep even the weakest of us alive, and one fine day perhaps we shall even resurrect the dead, call forth Lazarus from his cave. Do you know what that means? It means that we’re done, that this is as good as we’re going to get."
Ultimately, the scene seemed to set up three different storylines for Westworld season 2
- 1. James Delos is sick and wants to use the hosts as a way to cure his sickness by possibly transferring his consciousness into one.
- 2. William is poised to take over the Delos corporation and use Westworld to gather damning evidence on the rich and powerful visitors so he can blackmail them.
- 3. Dolores’ memories were not wiped each time she was reset and sent into the park, and she’s starting to remember everything, including what the outside world looks like.
The story continues to unfold when Westworld returns this Sunday night with “Virtù e Fortuna.”
