10) JIM BROADBENT

It was a great deal for Game of Thrones when they hooked A-List British actor Jim Broadbent to play the role of Archmaester Ebrose, and he didn’t disappoint. Bringing his famous curmudgeonly warmth to his character, Broadbent developed a nice rapport with John Bradley-West’s Samwell Tarly, despite the Citadel’s stiff attitudes about everything under the sun.

Broadbent’s fame came slowly (his first film extra role was in 1971) but he was patient, as he told the Radio Times in a 2017 interview:

"As a young actor, I was advised to bide my time. Back then, there weren’t good roles for someone like me. There were handsome leading men and character actors for smaller, supporting roles. But I was told to hang in there, and it was good advice. We’re all character actors now."

Broadbent’s acting resume is longer than Al Capone’s rap sheet, but let’s highlight a few of his films: Brazil (1985), The Crying Game (1992), Moulin Rouge! (2001), Gangs of New York (2002, below), Hot Fuzz (2007), Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008), Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (2009, above), Another Year (2010), Cloud Atlas (2012) and The Legend of Tarzan (2016).

Though he might be a late bloomer, Broadbent has been nominated for more than three dozen major thespian awards and won quite a few of them, including two Golden Globes, an Oscar and a BAFTA award.

You might expect that Broadbent’s prolific onscreen work leaves him little time for TV, but you’d be mistaken. His TV CV is stuffed with appearances on shows like The Black Adder (1983), Inspector Morse (1992), The Boss (1995-2000), London Spy (2015), War & Peace (2016), and, uh, Teletubbies (2015-2016).

If you want more Broadbent, he’s got lots of new stuff cooking. Look for him in Black 47 and King Lear this year, and The Voyage of Doctor Doolittle in 2019.
