19) JOSEPH MAWLE

Speaking of interesting characters who had relatively little screen time, we have to discuss Benjen Stark, the youngest brother of Eddard, who makes an early appearance as the First Ranger of the Night’s Watch and then vanishes for like, forever, only to to return in seasons 6 and 7 as a doomed half-wight. Benjen is first and foremost a heroic figure, and English actor Joseph Mawle does a fine job playing a character whose unseen story probably deserves an HBO series of its own.

Mawle tells Interview Magazine that he lost the majority of his hearing at the age of 16, but he feels it has helped his acting more than hurt it:

"I think it’s probably been a help. Partly because people are saying “No, no, don’t do it!” There is an element where it has been very useful—90 percent of our communication is through body language. The amount of hearing I had, and the fact that my eyes are very sharp, means I can combine the two."

Mawle’s first acting role was as an uncredited Village Man in the Merlin TV miniseries in 1998. Other TV credits include stints on Sir Gadbout, the Worst Knight in the Land (2002), Silent Witness (2006), The Secret Life of Mrs. Beeton (2006, below), The Passion (2008), Foyle’s War (2008), Merlin (again, 2009, above), Birdsong (2012) and Ripper Street (2013, 2016), a favorite for Thrones alumni.

You may have seen Malwe in feature films such as Lecture 21 (2008), Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter (2012), Half of a Yellow Sun (2013),  Kill Your Friends (2015) and The Heart of the Sea (2015).

Where can you see Malwe next? He plays the Greek hero Odysseus in the 2018 TV series Troy: Fall of a City.
