“Hey, they were in Game of Thrones”—Where else have you seen these 55 GoT cast members? (Part 2)
29) PAUL KAYE
Alas, we lost the wry, wine-loving Thoros of Myr to polar bear bite and hypothermia last season, but English actor Paul Kaye‘s fine performance will keep him in our memories for a long time to come. It’ll be interesting to see how long Beric Dondarrion will last without his angel of resurrection waiting in the wings.
If you look at Kaye’s long list of credits, you’ll see that his roots are in comedy, starting with a role as shock interviewer Dennis Pennis on The Sunday Show. Kaye tells WhatsOnStage how he moved on to more serious drama:
"Pennis was in part driven by an intense feeling of failure and disappointment and a sense of having nothing to lose; I see him less as the beginning of my career and more as the beginning of the end of my adolescence."
His TV appearances include Anyone for Pennis? (1995), the Very Important Pennis series (1996-1997), The Sunday Show (1995-1997), Spaced (1999), Chop Socky Chooks (2008), Midsomer Murders (2009), Shameless (2011), Ripper Street (2013), Doctor Who (2015), Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell (2015, above) and Zapped (2016-2017).
Kaye has also been busy making movies, including with a bit part as an uncredited ‘Zombie behind the Winchester’ in Shaun of the Dead (2004). He won more roles in Agent Cody Banks 2: Destination London (2004), It’s All Gone Pete Tong (2004, below), Match Point (2005) and Dracula Untold (2014).
In an interview with Den of Geek, Kaye talks about how much he’ll miss his Thrones costars: “I’ll miss the boys. We all got on so well. Rory McGann and Richard Dormer and Kit [Harington] and Kristof [Hivju], Joe Dempsie… we all got on brilliantly. A great little gang.” He also comments on how weird it was to shoot his character’s season 7 death scene, saying “[My] death, or my ruckus with the zombie polar bear was filmed in Belfast. I was fighting with some guy in a green suit holding a flaming wheelbarrow. It couldn’t get further from what ends up on telly!”
Kaye is keeping busy, as usual. Catch him in Wanderlust, Urban Myths and Tomorrow this year, and Good Omens in 2019.
