33) DEAN-CHARLES CHAPMAN

Alas, poor Tommen Baratheon/Lannister, the innocent boy king of Westeros who, despite his pit viper of a mother, stood no chance. English actor Dean-Charles Chapman effectively played the character as kind but weak-minded and naive, an inbred lad doing his best while the manipulative Cersei, Margaery Tyrell and High Sparrow tore him to pieces.

Chapman took on the role of Prince Tommen in Season 4, taking the place of actor Callum Wharry (Chapman had also briefly played the tiny part of the murdered Martyn Lannister in season 3). Tommen lasted until the end of Season 6; that’s a long life on Thrones. Chapman sat down with Vulture to discuss the filming of his jumping-out-the-window death scene:

"The stunt wasn’t too hard. I walk to the top of the window, fall off on a crash mat, and I basically face-planted. It’s really draining. The whole sequence, where he’s getting dressed, sitting on his seat, and the Mountain comes in, that was all one day. And the whole death scene, that was a long, long time. I’d say, Jesus, falling onto the mat? It’s got to be 30 times, or more, for all the different angles. I took a lot of face-plants. It’s all good!"

Chapman got his start in TV, snapping up parts in Casualty (2007), Cuckoo (2007), The Revolting World of Stanley Brown (2012), The White Queen (2013), Ripper Street (2014, above) and Will (2017). His film credits include Before I Go to Sleep (2014), Man Up (2015) and Breathe (2017).

Of course, Vulture had to ask Chapman about the fate of Tommen’s fan-favorite cat, Ser Pounce:

"Poor little fellow. It’d be a shame if he had watched Tommen jump out the window. It might give poor Pounce some mental problems. He’s probably still in Tommen’s chambers, hidden under the bed, shaking with fear or something. I hope he has no worries. I hope he runs around the castle, sees another cat, has some kittens."

Chapman is staying busy in 2018, appearing in the TV series The Badlands (above) and the film The Commuter.
