Emilia Clarke teases a divisive final season of Game of Thrones

Game of Thrones is ending in 2019, and after everything it’s served up over the past seven years, fans are expecting it to pull out all the stops for its final season. But what kind of ending are we in for? With so many fans, can it possibly please everyone? Speaking to the Herald Sun, Emilia Clarke (Daenerys Targaryen) teased what to expect:

"People will scream and people will say, ‘That’s exactly what I wanted.’ And some people will go, ‘Huh?’ — my mum, probably."

Interestingly, Clarke isn’t the first cast member to hint that the final season may split people. Maisie Williams (Arya Stark) said something very similar when talking to the Radio Times earlier this year:

"It’s either going to be everything that everyone dreamed of, or it’s gonna be disappointing. It depends which side of the fence you’re going to sit on.  I think no matter what you do there’s definitely going to be that divide. It depends on what people want from the final season. I love it, but I don’t know. You never know."

I think these comments are pretty interesting. To me, they’re a strong indication that season 8 will takes some surprising turns, since nothing divides people like the unexpected. But again, with a fandom this big, and with so many different fans wanting different things from an ending, I’m not sure anything could please them all.

Anyway, we’ll probably be grappling with questions about the ending right up until we get it. If any of this stresses you out, you’re free to focus on something less ambiguous, like the show’s spectacular special effects. YouTube channel ScreenPrism put together a thorough video exploring how the show uses special effects to create fantastical creatures and places without taking viewers out of the experience. Have a watch:

HBO has been filming Game of Thrones season 8 since October of 2017, and it’s still going strong. We can expect more stupendous effects in the final six episodes. But what’s going to happen in those episodes? Now we’re back to cryptic hints. Hang in there.
