Let’s take a deeper look at the next episode of Westworld–Phase Space.

The latest Westworld episode, Akane No Mai’, which aired this past Sunday on HBO, offered viewers a unique perspective on two immersive worlds, jumping effortlessly between the all too familiar, now empty and ravaged world that Dolores, Teddy, and the Delos Security team share.

Along with a new unknown, abundant, and thriving world–or at least it was until Maeve and her gang arrived on the scene!

The next episode is called ‘Phase Space’ which is an interesting choice of words as it means among other things, ‘a space in which all possible states of a system are represented’. Now, if we look at what is happening with Maeve (and possibly to Dolores), we can she has achieved super intelligence, and can now control any environment or ‘space’ with just her thoughts.

This implies that she has gained an awareness of ‘all possible states’ in the programming code of the host robots in order to use her new voice on them.

The latest trailer begins with Dolores and Bernard where he says, “I think I have a choice to make.” This may mean he is thinking about either setting her free or destroying her, and the comment reflects the moral conundrum that Bernard has had to wrestle with throughout the show, as he assists Dolores in becoming a conscious, sentient host.

She quickly responds by stating, “No, that’s not what he said”, but we do not know if she is referring to Arnold or Ford’s voice at this point, nor do we know if this conversation took place before Bernard took Dolores into the real world.

Could it be that Arnold has been remotely monitoring all dialogue between hosts and humans in real-time, hence his immediate response?

In season one, you will recall that Elsie accused Theresa Cullen of corporate espionage, so is it possible that the park and host source code were stolen and sent to the competition who now secretly control and monitor all hosts?

And could Arnold be the head of this other company, lurking in unknown parts of Delos Parks, waiting for it all to come crashing down–after making a few adjustments to the code and adding remote voice-commands?

As the scene cuts to present day Delos, we find Bernard and Elsie in the newly discovered facility and it seems that Elsie is using Bernard as a way of hacking into the ‘cradle’ as “it cannot be done remotely”.

This is a very significant moment as it shows that certain hosts can be used like keys to unlock backdoors and that they can be ‘plugged-in’ directly to hack the Delos network (assuming they have the right encryption codes).

This is reinforced when Elsie asks Bernard: “What do you see in there?” only to find Bernard looking at Teddy, a scene which was also shown in season one.

Meanwhile, things are heating up with Dolores, who is seen back in Sweetwater as she states, ”I know this place.”  This revelation tells us that Dolores is re-establishing a connection with her previous memories.

It also alludes to the idea that at some point in time, the unfamiliar will become recognizable. The same seems to be happening to Teddy, after his forced ‘attribute adjustment’ kicks in–courtesy of Wyatt, as he studies a bullet. Dolores is now in a position of control over her environment and could also become a super intelligent A.I. host, just like Maeve.

This memory recall in hosts could prove to be a major headache for Delos Incorporated, because Dolores has already been taken to the real world, and therefore has a map to get there–stored somewhere in her trace memory.

If she is now hell-bent on burning everything down, will she also go beyond Westworld and do the same? We also see her boarding the train to Mesa, but it does not appear that she will find her father, due to events taking place elsewhere…

Back in Shogun World, Elsie has detected that Maeve is altering the narratives and improvising, which she can see in the Delos code. We can be certain that the carnage will continue in Shogun World, as Maeve, ‘the butterfly’ continues flitting about the environment and discovering new capabilities.

She is also making new allies such as her counterpart Akane, who is now intrinsically linked with Maeve, like two atoms that are in quantum entanglement–and the sparks are sure to fly as a result!

Things are looking up for Delos Security, as they manage to successfully get the Delos Map online, as well as and locate and capture a not too happy Peter Abernathy, who is now in the hands of Ashley Stubbs.

As you will recall, Peter plays a very important role in season two since he is carrying a secure encrypted software key. This key could be used to open a backdoor, similar to the way that Elsie is using Bernard as a way to directly access and connect to the Delos network.
