George R.R. Martin strikes deal with Warner Bros. to adapt “The Ice Dragon” as an animated film
By Corey Smith
Deadline reports that A Song of Ice and Fire author George R.R. Martin has partnered with Warner Animation Group, a division of Time Warner, to adapt his children’s story The Ice Dragon into an animated feature film. Martin wrote The Ice Dragon in 1980, 16 years before A Game of Thrones was published. It follows the adventures of a young girl named Adara and her secret friend, the titular ice dragon. It’s not set in Westeros, but does take place in a sort of similar medieval world, with plenty of references to winter and war and whatnot. And also there are dragons, obviously. You can listen to the whole thing in audio form below; judge for yourself how many similarities it has to Martin’s other work.
Martin will serve as a producer on the project. The Hollywood Reporter has it that he may also take a crack at writing the script, although nothing’s been decided. If he does pick up the pen for this, that would surely panic A Song of Ice and Fire fans who would prefer he concentrate on finishing his novels, but we’ll cross that bridge when we come to it.
Allison Abbate and Chris Leahy will oversee the project for the studio. No release date has been set.
Next: Daenerys will finally have scenes with [SPOILER] in season 8, and other tidbits
