A Song of Dan and Josh: Eddard XIII (A Game of Thrones)
By Dan Selcke
Every week on the Winter Is Coming Facebook page, FanSided editor Josh Hill and I read through another chapter or two of A Song of Ice and Fire and break it down for you on camera? What is George R.R. Martin trying to tell us? What about this chapter works well? What doesn’t? How does it play into the greater story? These are the questions that keep nerds like me up at night.

This week, we hit a crucial chapter in A Game of Thrones, the first book in the series: Eddard XIII, the chapter where Robert Baratheon dies. Ned makes some crucial calls in this one. Are they the right ones? Let’s talk about it.
Most of our discussion revolves around whether Ned makes the right decisions. Was he right to mis-transcribe Robert’s last will and testament? Should he have told the king the truth about his children, even though that’s the last thing Robert would have heard before he died? What about Renly? Should Ned have taken him up on his offer to join forces against Cersei, or did he have the right idea to turn to Littlefinger? And how much of our opinion is clouded by the fact that we know that Ned’s decisions will lead to his death? Is the right thing still the right thing if it leads to the wrong end?
It’s a fun discussion, and we’re far from done. Next week, we dig into Jon VI and Eddard XIV. Hope to see you on Wednesday at 4:00 p.m. CST on our Facebook page!
