Filming on Game of Thrones season 8 might have wrapped, but we still have around a year to wait before the final episodes hit the airwaves in 2019. How to fill the time? HBO is on it. Billboard has it that the network has teamed with Columbia Records to bring us an album of music inspired by the epic series. Titled, appropriately, Music Inspired by Game of Thrones, the album will feature songs “from diverse musical genres.” Soft R&B rendition of “The Dornishman’s Wife,” maybe?
We don’t have a track listing yet, or even know exactly what HBO means by “music inspired by Game of Thrones,” but we have some guesses. Over the course of the show, several modern-day musicians have made covers of Westerosi songs, including versions of “The Rains of Castamere” by The National and Sigur Ros (the later of whom have a cameo at Joffrey’s wedding), and a rock cover of “The Bear and the Maiden Fair” by The Hold Steady. Remember when that one played immediately after Jaime lost his hand? YouTube remembers:
HBO previously released a pair of albums called “Catch the Throne.” Those involved rap and hip hop artists performing tracks inspired by the show, rather than covers. Is that what we’re in for with this new album?
Ultimately, we don’t know what shape the album will take, but as it tides us over until 2019, we’ll accept it.
