Season 8 filming: Smoke rises from the King’s Landing set

Certain cast members have shot all their scenes and the cast and crew held what looked like an end-of-series party last weekend, but shooting on the final season of Game of Thrones isn’t over. In particular, there’s been some very interesting activity on the massive King’s Landing set at Titanic Studios in Belfast. Multiple people have captured video of smoke wafting over the buildings:

Smoke fits the general theme of what we’ve seen an this set over the past couple weeks, and that theme is “fire.” The crew has painted multiple structures to look like they’ve sustained fire damage, and a large dragon rig showed up not long ago.

Put all that together, and it’s not hard to guess what’s causing this mischief.

Twitter’s own A Red Priestess has been grabbing great photos from the set for ages, and she brings us a few more today. That dragon rig, for example, has been covered up, possibly because the internet spread around photos of it in the open:

We’ve also got a closer look at the fire-damaged gate towers:

A Red Priestess has also noticed some new green screens popping up around the set. Obviously, if a dragon — alive or undead — is doing this to the city, it’ll need a lot of special effects work.

On top of that, there’s indication that the production has return to Cushendun Caves, which stood in for the cave beneath Storm’s End in season 2.

"It looks like they’re filming at the Cushenden Caves from freefolk"

Is Melisandre returning there to birth another shadow baby? We doubt it — there are any number of reasons the show might want to shoot in a cave — although the idea of returning to Storm’s End is nice.

What do you all make of this?
