Penguin Random House to publish Stranger Things books
Penguin Random House is partnering with Netflix to publish books based on the tremendously successful Stranger Things TV series. According to Deadline, the first two books will be released this fall, with one being a behind-the-scenes companion to the show, and the other a “hardcover gift book for young readers.”
The companion book has a very long title: Stranger Things: World Turned Upside Down: The Official Behind-The-Scenes Companion. Thus far, the gift book is nameless.
Then, in the spring of 2019, the publisher will release a Stranger Things prequel novel. Written by author Gwenda Bond (Girl on a Wire, Girl in the Shadows), the novel will be about Eleven’s (Millie Bobby Brown) mother and the MKUltra program. Project MKUltra, which was an actual CIA program, is how Eleven got her mental powers while being experimented on under the watchful eye of the nefarious Dr. Brenner (Matthew Modine).
Later in 2019, several as-yet-untitled books are planned for release. They’re going all-in.
Hopefully, these books will tide fans of Stranger Things over until season 3 debuts, probably early next year. Season 3 has already added three new characters: Francesca Reale (Haters Back Off) as a lifeguard at the Hawkins Community Pool “who becomes the centerpiece of a dark mystery,” Cary Elwes (The Princess Bride) as Mayor Kline, and Jake Busey (Star Ship Troopers) as Bruce, a journalist for the Hawkins newspaper.
