Westworld: 4 major questions from season 2, episode 10
The Westworld season 2 finale was mind-blowing. Not only because it was action-packed, but because the writers had more plot twists up their sleeves then Robert Ford had in his entire lifetime.
As you may already know, the show had amassed a myriad of questions throughout the season suggesting that the 90-minute episode was not going to be enough to wrap up most of the plot points. There was light shed on some of the wonders that made this season tick, but as is expected from Westworld, there is, even more, to mull over until the third installment which may not be released till 2020.
Now, here are the 4 major questions we had from episode 10, “The Passenger”! And as always, here is your warning for major spoilers ahead! You have been warned.
When does the Man in Black become a host?
After severing his fingers with Dolores’ booby-trapped gun, the Man in Black descends into the Forge, but there’s nothing more on the role he plays in the final moments of the Forge flood. In fact, there’s no sign of the Man in Black until the end of the episode when he’s rescued and is recovering in a tent on the beach.

During a post-credit scene, it is revealed that the elevators the Man in Black took down open into a dusty and decrepit version of the Forge and Emily, or who we can assume is a host version of his daughter, is expectedly waiting for him.
The Man in Black’s dissension into the Forge is yet another blasted timeline that takes place in the future as told to Vanity Fair by episode director Fred Toye. The Man in Black is a host in this future timeline and is on one of many attempts to ace the fidelity test. Emily is there to initiate the series of questions similar to those used on the host’s variants of James Delos by the Man in Black.
What can be gathered from this revelation is that the Man in Black survived the initial Valley Beyond fiasco. More than likely, he never moved after his hand exploded and a Delos rescue team picked him up during clean up. However, at a later time, he ends up as a host destined to repeat the same mistakes that lead to killing his daughter, questioning his ability to choose, blowing up his hand, and eventually descending into a Forge that is no longer functional.
What still remains to be discovered is when the Man in Black will become a host. The Man in Black had reflected on James Delos’ final breakdown by saying that humans weren’t meant to be turned into hosts. At what point does the Man in Black change his mind? Could the death of his daughter have something to do with the change of heart?
Who is Charlotte in the present time?
The major reveal is that in the better part of the future timeline, Charlotte was actually Dolores in disguise. Bernard killed Dolores and used her control unit in creating a Charlotte host. Using Charlotte’s Delos work credentials and a body designed to be detected as human by scanners, Dolores finally makes it into the real world.
And while I expected her to live her remaining years as a mole within Delos with the same face as Charlotte, the last scenes show Dolores looking like herself in a modern dress and bun.
This comes after Charlotte-Dolores accompanies Strand and Bernard to the Forge to retrieve Abernathy’s control unit. After finishing the Valley Beyond business and killing Strand and his men, Charlotte-Dolores kills Bernard too. She takes Bernard’s control unit, along with several others, to the real world.
Charlotte-Dolores recreates Bernard using a host machine that Robert purposely situated in Arnold’s house. Dolores also recreates herself to look like the ranch girl from Westworld. And yet, when the new Bernard has finished his fidelity testing, someone else is accompanying Dolores in Charlotte’s body.
Teddy’s consciousness was sent into the Valley Beyond. Peter Abernathy, Clementine, and Angela are also possibilities. I’m personally rooting for it to be Angela because she’s a personal fave.
Who does Dolores smuggle out of Westworld?
Dolores made it out of Westworld and boarded a boat to the real world. She carried about 5 control units in her bag and a gun. Due to Bernard’s rebirth post-Westworld, we can assume that one of the control balls belongs to Bernard, but the others can be a number of past Dolores devotees.
The obvious scenario for next season is that Dolores will be recreating the host bodies for the control units she carried with her.
Here’s a guesstimation on the possible candidates for the control units:
1. Peter Abernathy
2. Teddy Flood (even though she added him to the Valley beyond maybe she kept the ball as a memento)
3. The Valley Beyond
4. Angela
5. Clementine
Will we ever see the residents of the Valley Beyond again?
Dolores changes her mind on preventing the hosts who entered the Valley beyond from having a happily ever after. She claims to have sent them to a place where they can exist outside of the reach of humans but that they will be closed off from everyone else.
Next: Westworld: Breaking down the whirlwind season 2 finale
Does that mean that we will never see Akecheta ever again? Will Maeve, once restored (because I’m pretty sure Felix will bring her back), never see her daughter again?
We can only hope that season three answers the new questions they introduced in this special season finale. Most importantly, here’s hoping that the answers come sooner rather than later.
