A Quiet Place writers and Stranger Things producers to adapt Stephen King story
How’s this for fandoms coming together? Deadline reports that 21 Laps — the company behind Netflix’s hit show Stranger Things — is teaming up with Scott Beck and Bryan Woods — the writers behind horror hit A Quiet Place — to adapt The Boogeyman, a short story by Stephen King. Beck and Woods will serve as executive producers.
The Boogeyman was originally published in 1973, and then again in 1978 as part of King’s Night Shift short story collection. It follows a man named Lester Billings, who talks to his psychiatrist about the mysterious murders of his three children. Billings believes they’ve been killed by a malevolent monster living in his closet. In every case, each of Billings’ children would cry out “Boogeyman!” before being left alone to sleep. Later, when he found their bodies in their rooms, the closet door was always ajar, even though it was closed when he left them. Good luck sleeping tonight.
This will mark the first time a major film studio has optioned the story, although no less than seven filmmakers have made it into shorts. King, whose work is enjoying renewed interest from Hollywood types after the runaway success of It, is a fan of A Quiet Place, so he makes sense he’d play ball with Beck and Woods.
Beck and Woods wrote A Quiet Place with director and star John Krasinski, a million miles from Scranton. They made the film for $17 million. It grossed $325 million. 21 Laps is currently in production on Stranger Things season 3, which has been a smash success for Netflix.
