Fans of The Last Kingdom, rejoice! We’ve been a fan of the BBC/Netflix historical fiction series for a while, and now, it’s been confirmed that the medieval drama will be back for a third season later this year. That’s a relief, because for a while there it looked like Kingdom might not be renewed and we’d miss out on the further adventures of the charismatic and impulsive Uhtred of Bebbanburg.

Alexander Dreymon, who plays Uhtred, took to The Last Kingdom’s official Twitter account to break the good news:

The Last Kingdom is based on a series of novels called The Saxon Stories by author Bernard Cornwell, a contemporary of George R.R. Martin’s (and yes, The Last Kingdom has been compared to Game of Thrones, because look at it). The show has covered four of the 10 books in the series, and Cornwell intends to write more. For A Song of Ice and Fire readers awaiting the elusive Winds of Winter, The Saxon Stories might make a fun read.

The Last Kingdom begins in the year 872, when the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms of England have been invaded by Danes (Vikings). Only Wessex, under the control of King Alfred (David Dawson), remains undefeated. Enter our hero: the Young Uhtred (Tom Taylor), the son of the Saxon lord of Bebbanburg. Uhtred’s father and other Northumbrian lords are killed in battle with an invading Dane army led by Earl Ragnar (Peter Gantzler). The Young Uhtred and the Saxon girl Brida (Jocelyn Macnab) are taken into Ragnar’s household as slaves, and grow up knowing his children, the redheaded Thyra (Madeline Power) and the Young Ragnar.

The fact that season 3 will appear later this year is perfect timing for all of us Game of Thrones fans in dire need of some awesome swordplay and bloody questing tales (with Vikings!) to fill in those long days before the final season of Thrones rolls onto our TV screens in 2019.
