Game of Thrones is a very popular TV show, so it only makes sense that studios would be interested in work written by the guy behind it, author George R.R. Martin. Hence Nightflyers, an upcoming show from Syfy about a group of astronauts who go on a journey through space in order to make contact with a mysterious alien lifeform. “As they race towards first contact, terrifying and violent events begin to occur, causing the once tight-knit crew to mistrust each other. It’s not long before their main mission becomes survival.”

Sounds rough.

Yesterday, Syfy debuted the official trailer for the show at the San Diego Comic-Con. Have a watch:

It gives off serious Alien vibes, doesn’t it?

The trailer advertises the series as coming “from the mind of George R.R. Martin,” but the author isn’t actually involved in any way; even if he had the time wanted to, his exclusive contract with HBO prevents it. As for Syfy, it’s been on a bit of a cancellation kick lately, letting go of both Dark Matter and The Expanse, although the latter was picked up by Amazon Video.

And because it’s unconscionable to talk about Nightflyers without bringing up the likably cheesy 1987 movie adaptation, you can watch the trailer for that below. Feel free to compare and contrast:

As long as we’re talking about Comic-Con, let’s take a quick look at some of the other trailers debuting there. In addition to the trailer for the new season of Doctor Who, we’ve got the one for the upcoming season of The Walking Dead

…for the upcoming season of Fear the Walking Dead

…a reboot of Star Wars: The Clone Wars

Better Call Saul season 4…

Iron Fist season 2…

…the second half of Vikings season 5…

…and a trailer for a new series called Titans, about young DC superheroes:

“Fuck Batman.” Oh, the edginess. This one’ll air on DC Universe, DC’s upcoming streaming service. That could go a lotta ways…

Next: Eddie Redmayne: Fantastic Beasts sequel is “darker” than the first film
