We can all agree that the Man in Black makes one hell of a Westworld villain. No matter how you feel towards him, he has been a force to reckon with since season one.

A black shadow cast over all the Westworld hosts, especially Dolores; he is like a revenant that takes the souls of everyone who he sweeps past. Yes, this is dramatic and maybe is me exaggerating a little, but there is hardly anyone who has come out a better person from knowing the MIB.

The reason why we feel the way we do for older William is almost entirely because of Ed Harris’s performance as the Man in Black. A seasoned actor, Harris gave us some of the best acting of his career. And as much as I know there are those who want his character eliminated from the show, I can’t imagine not having the disillusioned William on this series.

Nominated for an Emmy, Gold Derby has confirmed that the episode that will be submitted for consideration is “Vanishing Point”. The ninth episode of season two, we are given the backstory of what drove William’s wife Juliet to killing herself. William confirms something that the viewers have known for a long time, that there is something dark inside him and he only is truly himself when at Westworld.

The episode also shows a different side to him, one who loves his daughter. And though it seems that Dolores is always on William’s mind, even at an older age, there is a part of him who cares about his wife. Not in a romantic sense, but in a mutual respect type of way–knowing she is the only one who sees through him. And I believe he feels sorry for her, sorry that he has come into this woman’s life and has left her empty and without her family.

The Emmy winners will be announced September 17th of this year and no matter what the outcome is, we know that despite us despising the Man in Black, no one could do him better than Ed Harris himself.
