Star Trek: Discovery finds its Spock
In the final moments of the first season finale of Star Trek: Discovery on CBS All Access, the crew of the Discovery came into contact with the Enterprise. Since then, Trekkies have been speculating who will fill the shoes of one of the most beloved characters to ever put on a Star Fleet uniform: Spock.
Well, they can stop, as Entertainment Weekly reports that Ethan Peck (The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, In Time) has been cast in the role. Peck, the grandson of legendary actor Gregory Peck (To Kill a Mockingbird) took to Instagram to celebrate the news.
Discovery, for those just joining us, is set before the original show, so this will be a younger version of Spock. Showrunner Alex Kurtzman had some kind words of welcome. “Through 52 years of television and film, a parallel universe and a mirror universe, Mr. Spock remains the only member of the original bridge crew to span every era of Star Trek,” he said. “The great Leonard Nimoy, then the brilliant Zachary Quinto, brought incomparable humanity to a character forever torn between logic and emotion.”
"We searched for months for an actor who would, like them, bring his own interpretation to the role. An actor who would, like them, effortlessly embody Spock’s greatest qualities, beyond obvious logic: empathy, intuition, compassion, confusion, and yearning. Ethan Peck walked into the room inhabiting all of these qualities, aware of his daunting responsibility to Leonard, Zack, and the fans, and ready to confront the challenge in the service of protecting and expanding on Spock’s legacy. In that spirit, we’re thrilled to welcome him to the family."
Peck’s new co-star Wilson Cruz (Dr. Hugh Culber) also made with the congratulations.
Yes, Cruz’s character died in season 1 but will be back for season 2. Anything can happen on the final frontier.
Peck will join Anson Mount (Inhumans), who plays Captain Christopher Pike. In season 2, Pike and part of his crew will take over the Discovery on Star Fleet’s orders. Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) will try to reconnect with Spock, her half-brother.
Star Trek: Discovery season 2 premieres in January of 2019.
