Here’s the good news, Star Wars fans: Ewan McGregor is still down to reprise the role of Obi-Wan Kenobi in a Star Wars standalone film. The bad news: as far McGregor knows, Disney doesn’t have any plans to make it.
McGregor dropped the bomb on The View, the one and only place for hard entertainment news. He spent most of the time talking about his new film Christopher Robin; we’ve time-stamped where Obi-Wan comes up.
“Yes, I would totally do it, of course,” he said to applause. “There’ s no plans, as such, to do it, as far as I know,” he continued, to silence.
"I’ve been asked this question for years and years, and I would be happy to do it. I think there must be a good story to tell as they’re doing spinoffs. There’s likely to be a good Obi-Wan between maybe me and Alec Guinness in that time. I’ve answered yes so many times it looks like I’m sort of touting for work at Disney’s door."
Ser Alec Guinness originated the role of Obi-Wan Kenobi in Star Wars, in 1977. McGregor gave us a more youthful take on the character in the prequel trilogy, starting with The Phantom Menace in 1999. When McGregor mentions “a good Obi-Wan between maybe me and Alec Guinness,” is he talking about a good Obi-Wan story or a good actor? If the latter, I can’t begin to fathom anyone else stepping into the role.
Solo, Disney’s most recent Star Wars spinoff, has underperformed at the box office. (I enjoyed it, for the record.) If Disney wants to charge up the Star Wars fanbase again, hiring McGregor for an Obi-Wan standalone film would be a good place to start. There have been rumors it’s happening for a while, but nothing solid.
If Disney were to hire another actor to play the Jedi Master, who could you see filling his robes?
