A Song of Dan and Josh: Tyrion VIII

It’s time for A Song of Dan and Josh, the show where myself and FanSided editor Josh Hill talk through each and every chapter of George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire. I’ve read the books multiple times, Josh has never read them. Let the analysis begin!

The Take the Black Podcast is now on iTunes, and Google Play! Please subscribe and download from there if you can. Also, you can help us out by giving us a five-star rating and leaving a friendly comment! We’re also now on Spreaker, so try us there, as well.

The hit parade:

  • This chapter highlights Tyrion Lannister’s deep and abiding daddy issues. Tywin Lannister dominates his son’s life in the worst way.
  • We’re introduced to two new important characters this week: Podrick Payne, who makes as small an impression as possible, and Shae, who looms rather larger. Tyrion and Shae are well matched — they’re both good with a one-liner — but Tyrion starts down a path here that will end in tragedy. Does it show this early?
  • Welcome to the Battle of the Green Fork! This is the first major battle in the series. What techniques does Martin use to depict the chaos of war?
  • The Battle of the Green is depicted on Game of Thrones, but with a couple twists. We get into it. Or: What does the Battle of the Green Fork have in common with Batman and Robin?

We’ll be next week with a close look at Catelyn X and a very different kind of battle scene. Hope to see you during the live stream on our Facebook page next Wendesday, August 22 at 4:00 p.m. CST!
