Trailer: Watch Stephen Dillane, James Cosmo and Chris Pine in Netflix’s Outlaw King

Netflix has released the first trailer for its upcoming historical drama Outlaw King, about, Robert the Bruce, the King of Scots from 1306 until 1329. Chris Pine (Captain Kirk in the new Star Trek movies) will play Robert the Bruce. He’ll have help from two people who have more than a little experience with medieval period pieces: Stephen Dillane and James Cosmo, who played Stannis Baratheon and Lord Commander Jeor Mormont respectively on Game of Thrones.

Outlaw King will tell “[t]he untold, true story of Robert The Bruce, who transformed from defeated nobleman to reluctant King to outlaw hero over the course of an extraordinary year. Forced into battle in order to save his family, his people and his country from the oppressive English occupation of medieval Scotland, Robert seizes the Scottish crown and rallies a ragtag group of men to face off against the wrath of the world’s strongest army led by the ferocious King Edward 1 and his volatile son, the Prince of Wales.”

Dillane plays Edward I “Longshanks” of England, with James Cosmo as Robert the Bruce’s father, Sir Robert VI de Brus. Interesting side note: Cosmo also starred in Mel Gibson’s Braveheart, another film about the Wars of Scottish Independence. He didn’t play anyone famous there, though, just a dude named Campbell.

Based on the trailer, I’m psyched to watch this film when it comes out later this year. Pine’s a solid actor, and I soak up epic medieval dramas like Braveheart…and Game of Thrones, obviously.

Outlaw King drops on Netflix on November 9, two months after it premieres at the 2018 Toronto International Film Festival.
