For fans of Doctor Who spin-offs, Big Finish have released two very different ones this week, with audio adventures of both Class and Lady Christina.

There are a couple of interesting Doctor Who spin-off releases from Big Finish this week, both for fans of TV spin-offs, and for those curious for something brand new.

First off, Tuesday saw the release of not one but two volumes of Class: The Audio Adventures. I’ve been curious about these box sets ever since they were announced. Particularly as Ace and the Daleks show up in the second volume. To be honest, it’s what made me finally check out the series from the very beginning!

For fans hoping that this will continue from the TV show’s massive cliffhanger, you might be disappointed. All the episodes in both volumes are set during the TV series, not afterwards.

But who knows? Maybe these box sets will be successful enough to lead into a continuation. After all, that’s exactly what happened with Torchwood. First Big Finish released stories that were mostly set during the TV series (particularly the first two seasons). Now, we’ve not only had season five, but are just a couple of months away from season six!

Oh, and I need to stress how good Big Finish’s official video for Class is. It’s not a trailer, but it’s a title sequence that follows the TV show’s original titles very well, while at the same time, showing off just how good Blair Mowat’s original theme for Class really was.

Lady Christina

Next up, and just out today, we’ve got a brand new spin-off. Lady Christina follows the adventures of the burglar and adventurer of the same name. Originally introduced in Tenth Doctor episode Planet of the Dead, Big Finish have now created a series with her.

While I’d be lying if I said I was keen on the idea as much as other spin-offs that Big Finish have made, I am cautiously optimistic. Like with the Class audios, Big Finish are using writers that I love for this one, including John Dorney and James Goss.

More from Winter is Coming

And their recent spin-off Jenny: The Doctor’s Daughter genuinely surprised me. While The Doctor’s Daughter isn’t one of my favorite TV episodes, Jenny’s own spin-off works really well, giving her really fun stories that help the character to shine so much more.

As a result, I’m curious to see what Big Finish will bring. Even if I don’t like it, at the end of the day, this series wasn’t created for me, not really. Just as Jago & Litefoot appeals to fans of the Fourth Doctor’s era, or Counter-Measures appeals to both Seventh Doctor fans and Sixties TV shows, Lady Christina looks set to be a series that’s aimed towards fans who enjoyed the lighter, more fun episodes of the Russell T Davies era.

Having said that, they also seem to have a female James Bond vibe, judging from Big Finish’s video for it. And the links with not just Doctor Who but also UNIT have made me very curious to check it out.

Class: The Audio Adventures and Lady Christina are available on both CD and download directly from Big Finish.
