Doctor Who: Peter Davison’s first season to be released on Blu-Ray

Peter Davison’s complete first season of Doctor Who will be released on Blu-Ray very shortly. What can we expect from this upcoming box set?

Following the success of the release of Tom Baker’s first season on Blu-Ray, BBC Studios has made some exciting news. Season Nineteen of Doctor Who will be released in the UK on Blu-Ray on November 19th, 2018.

Like the previous Blu-Ray release, this is a complete first season for a Classic Doctor, specifically Peter Davison, the Fifth Doctor. So there already seems to be a slight pattern with Doctor Who: The Collection. Will the next Blu-Ray release also be a Doctor’s first season? It’ll be interesting to see.

More from Winter is Coming

The stories that will be included in this box set are:

  • Castrovalva
  • Four to Doomsday
  • Kinda
  • The Visitation
  • Black Orchid
  • Earthshock
  • Time-Flight

Season Nineteen is an interesting choice for the second complete season to be released on Blu-Ray. But then again, while I don’t love it quite as much as Season Twelve, it does have some notable stories.

Castrovalva is a slow but solid introduction to the Fifth Doctor. The Visitation is a great combination of history and science-fiction. Black Orchid is silly, but heaps of fun to watch. And of course, Earthshock is a fantastic story that more than lives up to its title.

But if I had to pick a favorite, it would definitely be Kinda. Strange, surreal, horrifying, funny and occasionally beautiful to watch, Kinda is easily one of my favorite stories of the Fifth Doctor. That alone will be worth having on Blu-Ray.

(You can read more on all of these stories in our recent Twitch Watch articles here and here.)

Special features

Of course, it’s not just the stories themselves that will be worth having. A great deal of special features will be included in the box set, as currently listed in the official announcement. Many of which are exclusive to this set.

"Five new ‘Making-Of’ documentaries for Castrovalva, Four To Doomsday, Black Orchid, Earthshock and Time-FlightSurround sound mixes for Kinda and EarthshockAn extended version of Black Orchid Part OneRare studio footage from Castrovalva, Four To Doomsday, Earthshock and Time-FlightUpdated special effects for CastrovalvaSeven more editions of Behind The SofaA newly-shot one-hour interview ‘Peter Davison In Conversation with Matthew Sweet’And much more!"

It sounds like there’s a lot to look forward to with this release. But I think we’ll leave the last words to Tegan Jovanka (that’s usually the safest option).
