For Throwback Thursday, we’ve decided to revisit the Westworld season 1 finale revealed that was one of the most popular fan theories in the premiere season.

Westworld always has us theorizing and guessing and connecting dots that never really actually connect, except for when they do. In the season 1 finale, a popular theory came to fruition when it was revealed that William and the Man in Black are one in the same.

In “The Bicameral Mind” we learn that William has searched all throughout Westworld looking for Dolores after she had disappeared one night. During this quest, William became quite vicious towards the hosts and essentially became obsessed with the park. And when he inevitably did reunite with Dolores, she obviously doesn’t remember him.

This moment inevitably leads William down the path to becoming the Man in Black (remember that how epic that reveal was?), and the rest is history. Fans picked up on hints throughout the first season that William’s storyline and the Man in Black’s storyline were set in different times, but it was a tough one to pick up on especially considering it was the first season.

So what were

some of the things that stood out

about the fact that they were the same person? Well, the second episode showed William heading into Westworld, and when he arrives at the station, the logo is different than what we saw in the premiere. Secondly, Teddy is

not

there as he was in the season 1 one premiere meaning his narrative was probably different at that time versus the present.

The other clue was watching the different forms of Angela. In the flashbacks before the park is officially opened, she is seen dancing around the town square. When William arrives at Westworld in season 1, episode 2, she is the one to greet him as Angela. And then we see her again when she crosses paths with the Man in Black and he recognizes her and states that he thought she had been retired, so clearly it had been more than a few years since he saw her last.
