Okay, here’s the good news: HBO has given us our first-ever official glimpse of the final season of Game of Thrones! We’ve got brand-new, honest-to-goodness footage from the final six episodes. HBO slipped it in to a new “Coming Soon” reel highlighting upcoming seasons of several shows, including Veep, True Detective, Big Little Lies and of course, Game of Thrones.
And here’s the bad news: while we do have new footage, we only have three seconds of it. And I mean that literally; I counted.
Watch the trailer below; we’ve time-stamped the moment the new footage starts, at 1:10.
So what new scene do we have? Jon Snow has returned to Winterfell…
…and he greets Sansa with a hug!
Oh…that’s a steely glare if I’ve ever seen one.
This moment seems to be a callback to Jon and Sansa’s tearful reunion in “Book of the Stranger,” where they saw each other for the first time in years at Castle Black.
But based on the new (incredibly brief and completely uncontextualized) footage, this reunion at Winterfell seems more muted, and may even have a sinister undertone. Could Sansa be looking offscreen at Daenerys Targaryen, a foreign queen to whom the King in the North has now bent the knee? What will the northern lords think?
Watch the full trailer below. HBO splices in a few other snippets from season 7, but we think the Jon-and-Sansa two-shot is the only new footage:
