Tabletop game maker Defy Danger has released a massive Game of Thrones roleplaying tabletop game called Aegon’s Conquest, and the best part is, you can download it in PDF form on the organization’s website for free! According to PC Gamer, Aegon’s Conquest requires 33 players, and is so complex that the rules suggest a total of four gamemasters to run things, which means to properly play through this megagame, you’ll need to gather 37 of your closest friends and settle in for a very long campaign.

Here’s the pitch:

"It is the Age of Conquest, three centuries before the events of Game of Thrones. Westeros stands as a fractured continent, with seven warring kingdoms jostling each other for power and dominance. A new power has invaded from Old Valyria, bringing with them fire and blood. The time is now ripe to establish yourselves as the strongest Kingdom of the realm and unite Westeros under your banner. Claim victory in this continent-spanning war and forge the Iron Throne!"

Players are divided into eight teams of four, each of which takes on the role of a different great house alive and well at the time of the conquest. Options include House Lannister, House Stark, House Martell, House Arryn, House Durrandon, House Gardener, House Hoare and House Targaryen, plus one person who plays as the Night’s Watch.

Although no knowledge of the source material is required to play the game, Westerosi history buffs know that a few of those houses don’t survive Aegon’s Conquest. But that needn’t mean they don’t survive the game; between the wargaming and the role playing, anything can happen. The rules are tightly defined, but there’s plenty of room for “face-to-face diplomacy, tactical play, secret dealings, betrayal, and heartfelt roleplaying.” Here’s your chance to rewrite (fake) history!

Within the teams of four, players choose to play as the Lord, the Heir, the Knight or the Maester. To win, a team must claim the Iron Throne by having the most Power at the end of the game. “Power is gained by conquering neighboring lands, sieging enemy castles, uncovering ancient relics, and forging strong alliances. Power is lost when a House betrays another by revealing one of their secrets.”

Defy Danger has been working on Aegon’s Conquest since 2015, and in that time has successfully run through four full games. Everything you need to play the game can be downloaded here. Then it just a matter of finding people and time. With any luck, your game will run you right up to the start of season 8.
